Women in Algiers are treated conservatively at home
Created by the artist following his travels in North Africa, the canvas was obtained by the state at the time of its completion in 1834. While the layers of color remain well preserved, the thick yellowed varnish has made it increasingly challenging to appreciate the color virtuosity that established Women of Algiers as a benchmark for Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painters in recent decades.

The majority of the degraded varnish was consequently eliminated, leading to a reduction in the visibility of cracks within the material. A fresh application of natural varnish has revitalized the color saturation and contrast. This restoration allows for a deeper appreciation of the sentiments expressed by the painter Paul Signac, who stated regarding Women of Algiers: 'In Women of Algiers, [...] all of the warm, bright hues are balanced by their cool, tender complementary tones in a decorative symphony, marvellously imparting the sense of a calm, delightful harem.'
In 2022, the campaign persists with the conservation efforts for another masterpiece by Delacroix, The Death of Sardanapalus, made possible through the generous support of Ms. Isabelle Éalet.

Between the months of April and October 2021 Bénédict Tremolières and Luc Hurter, both working at the Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musées de France (C2RMF) in Paris, performed a conservation treatment on the painting Women Of Algiers In Their Apartment.
The artwork titled "Women of Algiers in their Apartment" is located in room 700 on the first level of the Denon wing.
