This virtual reality immersive experience, part of the 2020 Leonardo da Vinci exhibition, can also be viewed on smartphones. The painter of the work known as the Mona Lisa. The show "Mona Lisa: Beyond the Glass" is all about busting myths and telling the real story. This 8-minute virtual reality experience is based on the in-depth knowledge acquired by exhibition curators Louis Frank and Vincent Delieuvin over ten years of research for the major exhibition that was held in 2020.
The experience begins in the Salle des États at the Louvre, standing in front of the iconic painting, the Mona Lisa. From there, we get whisked off on a historical journey back to the original context and come face to face with the real woman that da Vinci painted. She is known as Mona Lisa or Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Francesco del Giocondo. She is brought to life, sharing details about the creation of her garment and how her hair is styled.
What remains to be said about the Mona Lisa? How can we move beyond the myths about this ultra-famous artwork? ‘Mona Lisa: Beyond the Glass’ sets out to dispel the folklore and tell the real story. This eight-minute VR experience is based on the knowledge compiled by exhibition curators Louis Frank and Vincent Delieuvin after a decade of research in preparation for the landmark 2020 exhibition.

The mysteries of 'sfumato'
Leonardo da Vinci used some techniques that, added to his fame, not everyone can understand. The virtual reality experience would show a close look at his painting methods and how those techniques brought his creations to life. Also, we put ourselves in the loggia, where the Mona Lisa may have been when her portrait was being painted. “Our inspiration for the loggia came from a drawing by Leonardo of an amazing villa with a belvedere over the great landscape in the painting. You will be in for a wonderful surprise at the end!” exclaimed Louis Frank, co-curator of the 2020 Leonardo da Vinci exhibition.
